Sandra Brown Pinnock is a mother of 2 and serial entrepreneur. In 2009, after working in the public sector for 15 years, she quit her job, sold her house and invested in a business venture that sought to address inadequate rehabilitation for mental health outpatients. Several years later, frustrated by a lack of knowledge and decent customer service whilst searching for a treatment for hair loss, she decided to open her own superstore for hair and hair products - Xsandy’s Hair and Cosmetics.
In 2016, Sandra was featured in a Channel 4 report talking about what inspired her to start Xsandy’s and calling for more support of black businesses.
Tell us about your latest venture?
Primal Beauty® is natural beauty brand formulated to maintain healthy hair and skin. All the ingredients are ethically sourced, simple, pure and 100% natural – just as the name implies and Mother Nature intended.
What inspired you to start your own venture?
The stress of running several different businesses for over 15 years took its toll, and I think my hair bore the brunt of it. It simply fell out. Not knowing what the cause was at the time, I sought advice wherever I could but was often poorly advised and bought ineffective products. What was most frustrating was that many products simply didn’t do what was said on the box, and the lack of product knowledge demonstrated by so-called experts on the high street. No one could advise on what was best for my hair or skin type. It was this that motivated me to launch the Primal Beauty® Natural Hair & Skincare product range.
How long have you been in business?
I’ve been running my own businesses for over 15 years now, but the Primal Beauty range has been around for about four years.
Tell us about one highlight of your entrepreneurial journey.
A highlight was Primal Beauty® Black Soap Shampoo winning the Precious Hair & Beauty Award for Best Hair Care Brand 2017. This shampoo was the brand’s first product. It had helped my own hair to grow back, so I knew it was a good product; on top of that, it was getting a lot of positive feedback from customers. Winning this coveted award was a real highlight!
The biggest lesson you’ve learnt is…
Never assume anything! Always do your research.
What’s next for you and your business?
Next for Primal Beauty® the brand is to get on the shelves of Superdrug and Boots. Next for me is to pursue my passion as a motivational speaker so that I can inspire others.
The very first thing you do when you wake up is…
And the last thing you do before going to sleep?
A typical day is…
Waking up at 6am, praying then planning my day, prioritising my ‘To do List’, checking my emails and answering the most important ones first. I leave the house by 9am for either my office or off-site meetings. I may either spend the day in meetings or in the Primal Beauty lab making products. My work day usually ends at around 7pm, then it starts all over again!
