Lianne Bruney has been an entrepreneur for over 15 years. Having owned and operated a successful vegetarian restaurant in the US, health and wellbeing has always been a passion; she has now applied this passion to her current business venture in the world of hair care.
She chatted with us whilst on a short business trip in Barcelona.
Hey Lianne. Tell us about your brand.
My brand is ProTress® Hair Care. I developed a product - ProTress® Essential Scalp Therapy Energising Shampoo and Lotion to treat hair loss. I’ll emphasise that ProTress® is more than a product - it’s also an educational tool, because I teach my customers about the causes of and cures for hair loss in addition to the scientific mechanics of afro hair which empowers them to seek the right hair care solutions.
What inspired you to start your own venture?
I was inspired after I lost my ‘edges’. I and many of my family and friends had all experienced general hair loss at one point or another so it got me thinking that there is a need out there. Afro hair is beautiful, but for me, it never seemed to thrive. So, I set about researching why this was the case and ProTress® was born. I want hair loss and hair breakage to become a thing of the past and for people with afro hair to have long, healthy, strong hair so that we can showcase our hair in all its glory, ‘because hair isn’t optional’.
Tell us about one highlight of your entrepreneurial journey.
A highlight is whenever a customer contacts me to tell me that hair loss has not only stopped but that their hair is growing back. This gets me excited because it’s an affirmation of the product doing what it should do: restoring hair growth and making hair thicker and stronger.
The biggest lesson you’ve learnt is…
Everyone wants to give you advice but it’s difficult to decide what to do and what to take on board. So, decision making still stops with me.
What impact has your venture had so far or what impact would you like your venture to have?
I think ProTress® is revolutionising the way people with afro hair care for their hair whilst also allowing them to understand the science behind hair. A lot of traditional afro hair care techniques contribute to hair loss so it’s important to get the word out there about the science of afro hair and hair loss. I know that because of the ProTress® product, women that were partially bald now have a full head of hair. Men that had hair loss and thinning now have thicker hair and have managed to keep it. This is exactly the kind of impact I wanted this product to have.
